Slade in the comics was a vet. A war hero. VERY patriotic and felt a strong kinship with other military men. He'd more likely punch someone for even joking about Plasmus spewing waste on the military.

Caffeine, a few days without any sleep, maybe some hard liquor. It's once I start wildly chain-smoking that I know I've hit that 'sweet spot'.
